An apprenticeship is a paid position of a minimum of 30 hours per week, including six hours per week of studying towards qualifications. Apprenticeships start from age 16, and can last from 12 months up to four years depending on your desired outcome level. Employers decide their apprentices’ wages, so there is no fixed salary. However, there is a National Minimum Wage for apprentices that employers must adhere to. The current National Minimum Wage for apprentices is £4.81 per hour for ages 16-18, and this continues to rise up to age 23 and £9.50 per hour. Lots of employers choose to pay above this.

There are lots of different apprenticeships available from level 2 to level 7, and the requirements can vary. For example, some apprenticeships may require GCSE Grade 4 / C in Maths and English. Please don’t worry if you don’t currently have those grades. The amazing thing about apprenticeships is that you can gain these qualifications through functional skills while you work. You will undergo an assessment to help establish a learning pathway to achieving the required grades, and you will take your exams at the end of your apprenticeship. Your apprenticeship will be structured to allow time for you to study, setting you up for success.
